Utrecht “Point” Limited Edition: how a contemporary dress commends the past

|

Each piece must be unique.

Cassina must have started from this consideration to celebrate its 90th anniversary with the launch of a Limited Edition of the Utrecht armchair. The artistic direction of Patricia Urquiola inserts this Special Edition within the “MutAzioni” path, which honors the important milestone of the company and helps to explore and keep alive all the Cassina classics.

Created exclusively for Mohd (Mollura Home Design), a Sicilian company specialized in high quality design, the Utrecht “Point” Limited Edition is produced in 90 unique pieces, one for each year since the Cassina foundation.

For this important milestone, Utrecht wears a new dress, an exclusive covering of Maharam fabrics by Kvadrat, designed for the occasion by Paul Smith. The distinguishable sign of the English stylist is hidden in that classic with an unexpected that characterizes all of his production.

Historical strength of Utrecht is its continuous padding, never interrupted by a material distinction of the individual parts. A padding that shows off in the round, with contrasting stitching that emphasizes the geometry of the armrest and hints to the elements of the seat and back.

The original model was designed in the 1930s by the architect-craftsman Gerrit Thomas Rietveld, who translated into industrial design the laws of the dynamic decomposition already typical of Cubism in painting. Utrecht is the definitive summa of this current that invests design and society. Since 1988 the armchair is produced exclusively by Cassina. With this new limited edition model, once again the company founded in Meda reflects its intuitive and forward-looking path, embracing new challenges and experimentation.

The mix and match of iconicity and contemporaneity of the “Utrecht Point” makes each piece doubly unique. The limited edition armchairs are progressively numbered from 1 to 90, in addition, the motifs of the design, multiplied and combined in rows and small points, allow a random fabric cut, therefore always unique.

The singularity of the product also emerges from the chromatic and decorative refinement of the signs of the fabric, with motifs reminiscent of the arcade game world and the Afro atmosphere.

The Utrecht “Point” wears a contemporary dress for a special anniversary and celebrates a contemporaneity that commends the past. It gives movement to the environments despite its apparent rigidity, for this reason I suggest you insert it in classic contexts, with natural nuances, to give an elegant touch of inspiration and modernity.
